Tokelau Language Week

For Tokelauan language week we created a slideshow with facts we found interesting about Tokelau. I worked in a group of 4. We researched and looked on different websites to find interesting facts to share on our google slide, 2 facts about Tokelau I found interesting was, Tokelau is such a small island that there isn’t a way to travel by plane, and Tokelaus capital city has a special attraction for vistors, where they see pigs swimming.

I enjoyed this task because I was able to do something for Tokelauan language week.

Decimal Subtraction

We learnt how to subtract decimal numbers by using the algorithm strategy. Something I found very helpful was remembering to borrow from the next number if the number you are subtracting is higher than what you are subtracting it from. Another helpful tip is by putting the bigger number on top that way it wont be that confusing.

I found this interesting because now I can subtract decimals by using the algorithm strategy easily.

Decimal Addition

We learnt how to add decimals by using writen algorithm. Some things I find that help me is when doing decimal Addition is to always have the numbers aligned as well as adding the place holder 0’s , so that you dont get confused. Always start from right to left and don’t forget to add remainders to the next number.

I found this fun because now I know how to add decimals.

Why Sleeping Is Important

For this activity we were challenge to research about why sleep is important and healthy. We were first given questions to answer about using videos andarticles to find the information we needed. Some questions we answered were “What are the effect of not getting enough sleep, Why is sleeping healthy, and what are the side effects of not getting enough or too much sleep “.

I enjoyed this activity because I learnt why sleeping is important as well as getting to use my smart searching skills to answer the questions.

Duffy birthday hats

We created birthday hats to celebrate Duffy’s 30th Birthday. We first started by searching for some ideas aswell as planing on how I would like my hat to turn out as. For my Duffy birthday hat I first start off with the number 30th as it was the easiest and simplest design. As I was thinking about more designs someone recommended some confetti’s on my hat as it would fill in all the blank spots , but I had a massive gap behind my hat so I decided to add “hip hip hooray” as it was a birthday celebration. Lastly to finish off my hat I decided to add on an paper flower and some gliter to bring some bling into my crown.

I enjoyed this activity because I got to use my smart searching skills as well as my imaginary to create something.

My Duffy Library

We created Duffy Boxes for student in our school to have something to store their Duffy books. We first used our smart searching skills to help us look for some designs online as it would help us alot with what type of design/theme we are going for such as zentangle designs and culture designs. Other classes also had their own designs where some had paint on their boxes, coloured their boxes, or even left it simple with one colour. As we all had Duffy on the cover of our boxes with our names. Also these boxes we’ve created were displayed on the stage for the birthday.

I really enjoyed this acitivitgy because I got really creative with the designs on my Duffy box and loved how it came out.

Duffy’s 30th Birthday

To celebrate Duffy’s 30th birthday Panmure bridge hosted an assembly with cake and surprises such as party hats, party poppers, and our duffy boxes. To celebrate 30 years of Duffy books in homes we were given a oppertunity to create our own libary box where we could store our duffy books that we have at home. Each class were able to create their own box aswell as it being on the stage at assembly to show their amazing work. Duffy is a company that started in 1994, founded by Alan Duff. He found out that there were schools with students that live in bookless homes. So he started Duffy books in homes to provide books to children without the privillege of having books.

We also had some special guest from Duffy books in home progame and they have talked about their experience with Duffy books and what their favourite books. Some of our teachers  also shared what their favourite books, and to finish it off we sang Happy brithday in English and Maori, and we also sang the Duffy song with actions.

I found this fun because Duffy books in home is a program that help with many schools who dont have a oppourtunity and also it helps with your reading skills.

Integers – Multiplication

Multiplication is easy when you know the rules and what negative numbers are. Negative numbers are numbers that have a lower value of zero. Like -1, 1 is lower than 0. Negative multiplied by a positive number will always become a negative number. For example -5 x 5 =-25, because when you multiply a negative number with a positive number it will always become a negative number. But when multiplying a negative by a negative the outcome will always be a positive. For example -6x-6 will be 36.  The answer will not be a negative because you are multiplying a negative number by a negative number.

I found this task a bit chanllenging because I can get confused most times when both numbers are negitave.

Paper Mache Mask

Last week friday was our last rotation for paper mache as we were making masks , as halloween is coming up. We first started off by blowing up a balllon that is the same size as our faces so that the paper mache would fit. After, we then used pva glue and little bits of paper to stick onto our ballon as it slowly becomes into a mask, you should always make sure you have at least 4 layers as it is more stable. This process is called paper mache , once we come back to tech we then started shaping the objects we want on the mask eg: eyes, nose, ears, and horns. we then use a bigger paper to shape our object and do the same steps we first did. After that week we came back and start getting into painting and adding things to our mask to make it stand out more, but first I planed what I would like my mask to turn out as. So I went with a venom kind of vibe. After painting I then started adding glitter to make mine shine out abit more, also adding googole eyes to make it seem kind of scary.

I enjoyed this task because I was able to use my imagination and creativity to create my mask.

Comrades Marathon

This week’s reading was the Comrades Marathon. We Predicted our thinking on the comment box and learnt and definde words that we were unsure of. As a group we read the story and shared our thinking based on our idea. We explained what we knew about the Marathon as a group, and needed to read the whole story to able to understand the text. When we answered the questions we came across an Imagine and had to come up with what we thought they were thinking or feeling.

I enjoyed this task because I learnt new words for an exmaple, Crucia, this means being a final or very important test or decision.
